NGC 5746

NGC 5746 is a magnitude 10.6 spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo and is estimated to be approximately 95 million light years distant.  Our view of the galaxy is from an edge on perspective.  This perspective limits information as to the shape of its spiral structure but does allow astronomers to measure particular aspects such as rotational rate and mass of the galaxy.  The galaxy's central halo is flattened and appears to be somewhat "box like".  Astronomers suspect that this structure can be associated with a barbed spiral type of galaxy as seen from the edge on perspective.
