NGC 4535 - The Lost Galaxy

NGC 4535 is an almost face on barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Virgo (The Virgin) approximately 50 million light-years distant[2].  Viewed through amateur telescopes, the galaxy has a "hazy", somewhat "ghostly", appearance.  This prompted amateur astronomer Leland S. Copeland to nickname NGC4535 the Lost Galaxy[2]

NGC 4535 has a diameter of approximately 117,000 light-years with 2 distinct main arms originating at thr ends of a central bar[1].   These features makes this majestic galaxy practically identical, in shape and size, to our own Milky Way galaxy[1].  If one were viewing the Milky Way from a distant galaxy, it would appear much the same as NGC 4535[1] .

The bright colors displayed in the above image not only make NGC 4535 a remarkable celestial vista, but also reveal scientific properties of the galaxy's stars.  The vibrant blue color in the spiral arms indicate the presence of hot young stars[2].  The yellower tones of the central bulge and bar indicate this area of the galaxy is populated with older, cooler, stars[2].
