Step: 3   Using Curves to Reduce Noise

The first part of this procedure is to determine just how much and what color the noise is composed of. The noise could have been eliminated by raising the black point of the image higher, but that would have erased faint objects. By determining the color of the faint noise we can use curves on that color alone and reduce just the dim part of the offending color leaving the rest of the data intact.

To see the noise we use a temporary application of curves. Open the curves window and drag the curve up and to the left. After we view the image we will cancel the curve application. All we want to do is note the colors and intensity of the background noise.

Note that most of the noise is green and red. The red is somewhat fainter than the green. This is all we need to know to proceed to the next step. Click on "Cancel" and exit the curves window.
